Pour Over Brewing Guide
Master the art of Pour Over coffee with this comprehensive brewing guide.
About This Method
Pour-over brewing gives you direct control over how water moves through the coffee bed. A paper filter creates a clean cup, while a controlled pour helps develop sweetness, clarity, and balance. This recipe works as a starting point for many cone-shaped manual brewers.
Recipe
Tools Needed
- Pour Over Dripper
- Compatible Paper Filter
- Burr Grinder
- Gooseneck Kettle
- Digital scale & Timer
How to Brew
-
Heat water to 200°F (93°C). Rinse the filter with hot water to eliminate paper taste and preheat your dripper. Discard water.
-
Grind 20 grams of coffee to a medium-fine consistency, similar to table salt.
-
Place the ground coffee in the filter and gently shake to level the bed.
-
Start your timer and pour 60 grams of water in a circular motion, ensuring all grounds are saturated. Let bloom for 30-45 seconds.
-
Continue pouring water in slow, steady circles, maintaining the water level and avoiding the sides of the filter.
-
Pour until you reach 320 grams of total water. The entire brew should take 3-4 minutes.
-
Once the dripping stops, remove the dripper and discard the filter.
-
Swirl the carafe gently to mix the coffee, then pour and enjoy!
Pro Tips
- Pour steadily and avoid pouring directly onto the paper filter.
- If the brew drains too quickly and tastes weak, grind finer.
- If it drains too slowly and tastes bitter or dry, grind coarser.
- Keep your recipe and technique consistent before changing variables.
- Pour-over brewing turns preparation into part of the experience. With patience and consistency, it produces a cup that clearly expresses the coffee’s origin, processing, and roast.
